Marine Cargo Insurance is essential for safeguarding your goods during transit by sea, air, or land. It protects against theft, damage, or loss, ensuring financial security. In addition to covering loss or damage, Cargo Insurance also protects against General Average, pays for the costs to minimize a loss (sue and labor), and pays for damage inspection (survey). Carriers also have limited liability and are provided legal defenses which absolve them of responsibility entirely. Cargo Insurance pays covered claims without the need to prove fault.

General average is a maritime law principle where all parties in a sea voyage (ship owner, cargo owners) share the financial losses from an intentional sacrifice made to save the entire ship and cargo from imminent peril. Examples from marine cargo insurance context include: a) ship crew throws 20 containers overboard to lighten ship during storm; b) Ship ballast tanks flooded intentionally to refloat grounded vessel; c) extraordinary salvage/towage costs to save vessel from sinking. Marine cargo insurance covers your proportional contribution, preventing out-of-pocket payment when general average is declared

All-risk coverage (Institute Cargo Clauses A) insures against any fortuitous physical loss or damage unless specifically excluded, offering the broadest protection available. Common exclusions include inherent defects, gradual deterioration, or insufficient packaging.

FPA (Free of Particular Average) covers only total loss or major vessel incidents; WA (With Average) adds partial losses from named perils; all-risk provides comprehensive coverage for most physical damage.

Coverage typically includes temporary warehouse storage during normal transit (30–60 days), but extended warehouse coverage can be added for longer periods.

Policies cover warehouse damage, collision, fire, theft, war risks, terrorism, strikes, piracy, and general average from origin to destination.

Single trip policies cover one specific shipment; annual (open) policies automatically insure all qualifying shipments during the policy period, ideal for frequent shippers.

Carrier liability is limited (often $500/package under COGSA), excludes many perils, and protects the carrier, not you. Marine cargo insurance provides broader, first-party protection for your goods' full value.

Provide shipment details: origin/destination, commodity description, value, packaging type, transport mode, Incoterms, and any special risks or exclusions needed.

Notify your broker within 24–72 hours of incident, document damage with photos/surveys, and submit claim within policy deadlines (usually 60 days from delivery).
